Phishers use free iPhone 5S as lure ahead of launch

As the moment when Apple is set to unveil its latest offerings slowly approaches and it seems almost sure they will show several version of iPhone 5, cyber scammers are trying to convince potential victims that they are the lucky ones who get one and a new iPad for free.

An email purporting to come from the Apple Store claims that the recipient has won the aforementioned devices and has to claim them by clicking on the link included in the email and entering his or her email address and password in the online form:

The phishing attempt is amateurish, but there are always those who will fall for it.

According to Trend Micro researchers, the majority of them are currently users from Malaysia and Singapore.

When faced with offers like this, it’s always better to assume that if something is too good to be true, it probably is. In this particular case, it would have been better for the victims if they had checked the claim with Apple directly.
