Manatt expands cybersecurity practice to meet client needs

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips announced that it has expanded its nationally ranked privacy and data security practice with the addition of Ingrid Beierly, John V. Treviño and Peter J. Reid.

This expansion with Beierly and Reid, who will serve as business and compliance consultants, and Treviño, a privacy and technology counsel, reflects Manatt’s strategy of combining the legal practice and consulting in order to offer solutions to meet its clients’ business needs.

“John and Peter have proven track records of developing and managing complex in-house corporate privacy and security programs, including addressing new European and other regulatory frameworks such as GDPR and the recently passed CCPA,” said Donna L. Wilson, chair of Manatt’s privacy and data security practice and the firm’s CEO and Managing Partner-Elect.

“Ingrid’s experience as a technologist and head of forensic investigations at Visa will provide our clients with unique capabilities, particularly as the risk and exposure due to payment card incidents and the resultant imposition of financial assessments continue to escalate for companies and their insurance carriers.”

“We are excited to bring these highly experienced professionals to Manatt. All three are known for their results-oriented approaches, and as Manatt continues to integrate its legal and consultancy offerings, their strong technical and in-house backgrounds will be of immediate value to our clients,” said William T. Quicksilver, CEO and managing partner.

Beierly previously served as a global forensic and cyberintelligence business leader with Visa for over a decade. She spearheaded global computer forensic investigations impacting credit card members, merchants and service providers, providing insight on fraud investigations, data security compromises and compliance preparation.

Beierly also was instrumental in developing data security programs, such as the Cardholder Information Security Program (now known as Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards), the Payment Application Data Security Standard, Payment Forensic Investigator, and Qualified Integrator and Reseller program.

“Clients face complex, difficult, multifaceted challenges. I was attracted to Manatt’s approach of putting clients first and devising its services and structure around clients’ needs and goals. This creates a better client experience,” said Beierly.

Treviño brings technology and privacy and data protection experience, particularly internationally. He previously has served as an in-house privacy and compliance attorney in corporate legal departments of major telecommunications, travel and technology companies, including BT Americas Inc. and American Airlines.

Treviño also has served as a data privacy officer, a role in which he designed and implemented data governance strategies and identified privacy-related enterprise risks at both the regional and global levels. Treviño earned his B.A. in English from the University of Texas and his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law.

“Manatt is an ideal fit for me. Today’s environment demands a new kind of strategic partner — one who brings knowledge and insight across every facet of today’s legal, regulatory and business systems,” said Treviño.

Reid previously served as privacy officer for Hewlett-Packard’s business groups and global functions, where he was responsible for all aspects of privacy across each of HP’s operating units, and managed the data breach process for HP’s Services Businesses.

He also served as chief privacy officer at EDS Corporation prior to the company’s acquisition by HP, working with global clients in various regulated industries. Reid also previously served as a principal of the national privacy practice at Fiderus and had a long-tenured career at NCR Corporation, where he developed a background in IT solutions for the financial services, retail, communications, transportation and public-sector markets.

He was most recently an independent privacy consultant. Reid earned a B.Sc. in mathematics from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England.

“With deep sector experience and a commitment to staying ahead of clients’ needs, Manatt is able to anticipate and address tomorrow’s privacy and security challenges today,” said Reid.

“Manatt’s long history of legal services complements my background in privacy advisory and technology solutions, and I look forward to working in tandem with the firm’s attorneys to ensure the best possible outcomes for clients.”
