French Overseas Public Radio-And-TV Network Taps CA’s Unicenter And eTrust To Ensure Non-Stop Operations

Industry-Leading eBusiness Management Solutions Enable RFO to More Effectively Manage and Secure Transmission Infrastructure, Servers and Applications ISLANDIA, N.Y. and NANTERRE, FRANCE, June 25, 2002 – Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced that Radiodiffusion et de Télévision Fran?§aise pour l’Outre-mer (RFO) – France’s overseas public radio and TV network – has chosen CA’s acclaimed Unicenter and eTrust solutions to ensure the availability, performance and security of its critical transmission infrastructure and IT services. By implementing CA’s integrated, easy-to-administer solutions, RFO has successfully enhanced service levels, minimized the risks associated with network attacks, and increased the operational efficiency of its widely dispersed IT organization.

As the leading media organization for France’s overseas territories, RFO relies heavily on its sophisticated global satellite and landline network. As this network was called upon to support a growing diversity and volume of media content and IT services, RFO began looking for a more efficient and effective way to ensure its uninterrupted operation. A primary requirement of RFO’s new management system was the ability to view all events occurring on its local and wide area network. Because any breakdown in RFO’s transmission chain can bring its programs to an instant halt, real-time monitoring and alerts were essential.

“Our network must never be saturated,” said Robert Moy, IT director at RFO. “That is why we needed a solution that would instantly alert us to any problem or potential problem anywhere on the network.”

Following technical evaluations of competing vendors’ products, RFO selected CA’s Unicenter as its management platform-of-choice. RFO rolled out Unicenter solutions in several steps – starting with Unicenter Asset Management and Unicenter Software Delivery, followed by Unicenter Advanced Network Management. After successful experiences with these solutions, RFO further enhanced its network and system administration by installing Unicenter Remote Control and Unicenter ServicePlus Service Desk.

As a result of these progressive deployments, RFO has now gained unprecedented control over its end-to-end content transmission and IT services infrastructure. RFO’s technical staff can immediately pinpoint conditions that threaten content and service delivery and can quickly take action to remedy those conditions. They can also efficiently distribute software updates as required to servers and desktops around the world – significantly reducing operational costs.

As it deployed CA’s Unicenter solutions to improve service levels and operational efficiency, RFO also moved to better protect its critical network and system resources against malicious content.

In particular, Moy was concerned about rapidly proliferating virus threats. With more than 400 PCs in its headquarters alone, updating virus protection had become a labor-intensive task. “We had to execute updates manually on each PC, which was a major problem,” he said.

To solve that problem, RFO implemented CA’s eTrust Antivirus solution, which automatically and rapidly distributes new protection updates to all of RFO’s systems.

RFO sped its deployment and ensured maximum benefits from its Unicenter and eTrust solutions by taking advantage of CA’s implementation and training services. “Even the best technology in the world won’t do you much good if you don’t use it properly,” says Moy. “CA Services took a lot of pressure off of our technicians and helped us start seeing concrete results almost immediately.”

“Today’s mission-critical, complex networks require attention to a wide range of management tasks that can’t be efficiently performed using an amalgamation of individual “point’ solutions,” says Derek Masters, general manager, CA France. “The service assurance solution that RFO has been able to create with CA’s technology and professional services clearly delivers a level of efficiency and reliability that cannot be matched by other suppliers at any price.”
