Snapgear Scoops Linux Journal Editor’s Choice Awards

Snap Gear voted as best server appliance ahead of Sun’s Cobalt Qube

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – September 5th, 2002 – SnapGear Inc., a leading supplier of Internet security solutions, has taken out the prestigious Linux Journal Editor’s Choice Award for best server appliance.

Linux Journal stated: “Our April 2002 review of the Snap Gear Lite concluded that for the price and functionality, it can’t be beat. Besides firewall and NAT, this handy device also functions as a VPN client to protect any kind of network traffic easily.” The winning products were the Snap Gear LITE/LITE+ VPN Firewall appliances. An honorable mention was given to Sun Microsystems for their Cobalt Qube.

Linux Journal’s Editors’ Choice Awards are well-known as the premiere forum recognizing outstanding product developments and achievements in the Linux market. A panel of more than 50 distinguished Linux experts was assembled to nominate products for the awards, which were then sent to the Linux Journal editors who chose the final winners. Full details of the awards will feature in the September 2002 issue of Linux Journal.

Miles Gillham, VP Marketing for Snap Gear, said: “We deploy embedded Linux in all of our products because it provides the most commercially useful solution for our customers. Most of our customers don’t realise that we use embedded Linux and it doesn’t matter to them – they buy our products because of the features that we provide and our long experience with Internet security. In one year we’ve overtaken most of our competitors, some of whom have had a five-year product development head start. Now we’re moving ahead of our competitors in performance and value-add yet our prices stay affordable.”

Recent surveys show that embedded Linux is moving into first place in 2002 for embedded application development. Reasons cited include high stability, code maturity, an abundance of ready-made application code, and low cost.
