Blue Coat Systems and Websense Team to Accelerate Next-Generation Employee Internet Management

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and SAN DIEGO, Jan. 7, 2003 – Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BCSI), a Web security company, and Websense, Inc. (Nasdaq: WBSN), the worldwide leader of employee Internet management (EIM) solutions, today announced an enhanced strategic partnership to distribute Websense’s next-generation EIM database on Blue Coat’s award-winning Web security appliance platform.

The new agreement will allow for the Websense Master Databases to be offered integrated on the box with Blue Coat’s high-performance appliance platform – recently named a “world-class” award winner by Network World. The Websense for Blue Coat solution will support the Websense Master Database featuring more than 80 categories of content, add-on Premium Groups that help IT managers stop malicious mobile code and spyware, and support for 44 different languages.

“Organizations are clearly seeking comprehensive, integrated solutions for outbound Internet access – ones that combine requisite security controls such as user authentication, URL filtering, and anti-virus with quality-of-experience features such as caching and bandwidth management,” said Mark Bouchard, senior program director of Global Networking Strategies for META Group. “When it comes to URL filtering, critical criteria include a leading database of categorized sites and an architecture that minimizes impact on user sessions. An on-box approach supports these requirements, typically providing excellent performance.”

“Customers have requested this type of integrated solution, and we’re pleased to now provide a new deployment option that optimizes functionality without compromising performance,” said Andy Meyer, vice president of marketing for Websense Inc. “The integration of the Websense Master Database directly onto the Blue Coat security platform allows IT administrators to receive benefits of two award-winning products in a single solution.”

“Websense for Blue Coat is the ideal fit for customers who want superior performance and ease of deployment for URL filtering,” said Charles Dauber, vice president of marketing for Blue Coat Systems. “By leveraging our advanced Policy Processing Engineâ„?, security administrators can apply granular security policies across multiple Web security services, including content filtering, Web-based virus scanning, content security and bandwidth management.”

Blue Coat will also support the Websense Reporter product, which offers more than 60 reports by site category, URL, user, department, number of bytes downloaded, time of day or length of download. This helps organizations identify Internet use and security problems, and customize their Internet access enforcement accordingly.
