Independent Study Finds NetScreen Security Solutions Outperform Legacy, Software-Based Products in Cost of Ownership

GUILDFORD, U.K., April 2, 2003—NetScreen Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: NSCN) today announced that a recent study conducted by Giga Information Group, a leading global technology advisory research firm recently purchased by Forrester Research, found that NetScreen integrated network security solutions provide potential cost advantages when compared to software-based security solutions deployed in enterprise network environments.

When comparing security solutions, organisations often consider the total cost of ownership (TCO) incurred during a solution’s lifecycle including items such as acquisition, support, deployment and operation costs. Giga’s analysis indicates that expanding an existing security deployment with NetScreen solutions can provide a 56 percent cost advantage when compared to the capital, licensing, service and support subscription, and ongoing maintenance costs of legacy, software-based solutions over a three-year period. This analysis is based on a sampling of four NetScreen enterprise customers’ estimated total costs of using NetScreen solutions compared to Giga’s estimates of the costs associated with using existing software-based, hybrid security products – where the hardware, operating system and security application are not fully integrated and developed by a single vendor. The study also found that replacement of a legacy environment with NetScreen solutions can result in a 20 percent lower cost over a three-year period.

“These results are based on the experiences of large global enterprises that have already made the switch to a NetScreen-based security solution and found it can potentially cost less than a software-based, hybrid approach without jeopardizing network performance or compromising security protection,” said Jon Erickson, senior industry analyst at Giga Information Group.

NetScreen’s purpose built, hardware-based solutions provide a TCO advantage by integrating multiple security functions – firewall, VPN, denial of service attack protection and traffic management – in a single purpose-built hardware-based device. NetScreen solutions provide ease-of-installation features and robust management functionality, enabling enterprise customers to easily deploy and maintain a NetScreen security solution without incurring costs associated with software-based, hybrid solutions.

“Many of our customers tell us that NetScreen’s solutions provide a compelling combination of security functionality, performance and TCO value,” said David Flynn, vice president of marketing at NetScreen. “This third-party study demonstrates the type of savings many of our customers have already realized and provides the estimates prospective customers often need to analyse and solidify expansion and replacement plans of security solutions using appliance-based options.”

Giga examined the economic impact of NetScreen’s virtual private network (VPN) and firewall appliance-based solution. Giga, using its Total Economic Impact (TEI) model, compared the costs of expanding and replacing firewall solutions where the hardware, operating system and security application are not integrated and platforms where the hardware and software come fully integrated from a single vendor, NetScreen.
