Snapgear Announces New Embedded Linux Platforms For Intel Network Processors

New offering combines embedded Linux security and high-performance network processors for Internet-ready embedded appliance applications

SAN FRANCISCO – LinuxWorld Conference & Expo – Aug. 5, 2003 -SnapGear Inc., a leader in embedded Linux security, today announced new embedded Linux platforms using network processors based on Intel® XScaleâ„? technology. The platforms are immediately available from Intel or SnapGear with a variety of development platform and product formats.

Intel will ship SnapGear’s embedded Linux distribution with development boards for the Intel IXP4XX network processor product line. SnapGear offers a development environment for OEM customers using Intel network processor configurations for VPN firewall appliances. SnapGear acts as an ODM (Original Device Manufacturer) for some of the world’s leading communications companies, offering turnkey product solutions for secure Web communications. Developers can download the SnapGear embedded Linux distribution, including the proven uClinux microkernel distribution, free of charge at www.snapgear.org.

“Intel continues to focus on providing cost-effective, power-efficient network processor solutions that extend from small office equipment to service providers’ core switching equipment,” said Jim Finnegan, general manager, Intel Network Processor Division. “Working with companies like SnapGear helps ensure broad support for embedded Linux for networking appliances and secure Internet communications.”

“The Intel network processors give us a strategic advantage in developing custom applications that dramatically shorten time-to-market for our customers,” said Rick Stevenson, CEO of SnapGear. “The scalable network processor line also promises improved performance, ease of component integration, and advanced network security features for our enterprise network appliance line.”

The Intel IXP4XX network processor family addresses the needs of many wired and wireless applications for the home, small office/home office (SOHO) and small- to medium-enterprise (SME) market segments. With their Intel XScale core, these processors combine the performance headroom to support rich application services with the time-to-market benefits of a common architecture.

SnapGear offers a line of network appliances built around embedded Linux that provide businesses with secure Internet communications.
