Syngress Publishing Announces the Release of “WarDriving: Drive, Detect, Defend”

Rockland, MA–April 24, 2004–Syngress Publishing, Inc., today announced the publication of “WarDriving: Drive, Detect, Defend” (ISBN: 1-931836-03-5).

“WarDriving: Drive, Detect, Defend” will arrive in bookstores and at online retailers in May. It is the first book to focus exclusively on the recent phenomenon of “WarDriving,” loosely defined in the world of high-tech computer security as “moving around a specific area for the purpose of mapping the population of wireless access points within that area.”

The authors of the book are Chris Hurley, Frank Thornton and Michael Puchol; and they go by the “handles” of ROAMER, THORN and MOTHER respectively. The book’s technical consultant is Russ Rogers. Jeff Moss, President and CEO of Black Hat, Inc., has described the authors as “the people who both pioneered and refined the field.”

Chris Williams, President of Syngress Publishing, said, “‘WarDriving: Drive, Detect, Defend’ is just the kind of book IT security professionals have come to expect from us over the last couple of years. It is unique, authoritative, and at times entertaining. Most importantly, it is essential reading for anyone involved with wireless communications.”

Chapter topics include: Learning to WarDrive, NetStumbler and MiniStumbler, Operating NetStumbler and MiniStumbler, Installing Kismet in Slackware Linux 9.1, Installing Kismet in Fedora Core 1, Configuring and Using Kismet, Mapping WarDrives Using StumbVerter, Organizing WarDrives, Attacking Wireless Networks, Basic Wireless Network Security, and Advanced Wireless Network Security.

Here are some of the early accolades for WarDriving: Drive, Detect, Defend:
“A comprehensive and authoritative guide to WarDriving and wireless security.”
–Mike Kershaw (Dragorn), Kismet author

“WarDriving is a book that covers every aspect of wireless security from some of the most respected people in the wireless community. It should be on every IT person’s bookshelf and required reading for anyone who is looking at deploying or who currently has a wireless network.” –John Kleinschmidt, Michiganwireless.org Founder and Vice President of Technology & Security, PC Powersystems

“This is the ‘Kama Sutra’ of wardriving literature. If you can’t wardrive after reading this, nature has selected you not to. This is the first complete guide on the subject we’ve ever seen (it mentions us). Don’t quote me on that.”
–Bob “bobzilla” Hagemann, WiGLE.net CoFounder
