TippingPoint’s UnityOne Intrusion Prevention System Awarded SANS “Trusted Tool’ Designation

AUSTIN, Texas – May 13, 2004 – TippingPoint Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: TPTI), the leader in intrusion prevention, today announced that its UnityOneâ„? Intrusion Prevention System was selected as a “Trusted Tool’ by the SANS Institute, the world’s premier security research and training organization.

According to Stephen Northcutt, the director of Training and Certification for the SANS Institute, “This is the first time SANS has ever endorsed a security technology, and our standards are extremely high. We have carefully selected our Trusted Tools based on customer interviews and third party testimonials.”

Stephen first heard about UnityOne from one of his students, a systems administrator at the University of North Carolina (UNC). They were evaluating a UnityOne on approval when Blaster hit. The part of the university protected by the TippingPoint system was unscathed, where the rest of the medical school suffered damage. The story caused Stephen to seriously investigate TippingPoint’s technology and intrusion prevention in general. SANS has just launched the inaugural edition of Trusted Tools, a collection of firstperson descriptions from actual users of hand-selected security tools. Only vendors selected by SANS as trusted technologies are invited to participate in the case studies. The cases are compiled by Stephen Northcutt, the director of Training and Certification for the SANS Institute.

TippingPoint’s Chief Technology and Strategy Officer Marc Willebeek-LeMair said, “We are extremely pleased that our product has achieved the Trusted Tool designation by the SANS Institute. With 250,000 subscribers to the SANS newsletter, there is no higher authority in the area of security than SANS. We are deeply grateful to be honored by such a recognized and trusted third party.”
