Reports published by IDC and Forrester point to the continued strong growth of Linux. IDC expects the overall enterprise server market to grow 5 per cent in 2004 and to achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next five years of 3.8 per cent, from $53 billion this year to $60.8 billion in 2008. The IDC report predicts that the most dramatic growth within this category will be for Linux-based servers. The use and adoption of Linux will grow at a 47 per cent rate, reaching $3.23 billion this year. Linux machines are expected to capture 29 per cent of the server market by 2008, nearly tripling their current market share.
