USB reader combines flash memory with contactless smart card technology

HID Global announced a portable, dongle-sized USB smart card reader that includes a removable MicroSD flash memory slot and reader for SIM-sized contactless smart cards. By supporting flexible memory up to 32GB, the OMNIKEY 6221 USB reader is both cost effective and a future-proof investment for organizations looking to improve mobile document security.

This reader delivers data protection and secure content issuance using encryption and digital signatures in conjunction with PIN protection. The removable SAM module gives organizations the flexibility to re-use the reader by simply issuing a new SAM module when needed.

The OMNIKEY 6221 measures 3.7 inches long by 1.02 inches wide by 0.59 inches high (94 x 26 x 15 mm). The reader is based on the same technology and drivers as the OMNIKEY desktop product family of logical access readers, making it easy to integrate into existing OMNIKEY applications.

The reader is designed to meet all major standards, including ISO 7816, Microsoft WHQL, USB CCID, PC/SC, HBCI (Home Banking Computer Interface) and the PC-2001specification. In addition, it works on any operating-system platform supporting CCID and USB removable media, without requiring any drivers to be installed.
