F-Secure introduces FileCrypto for Symbian OS, the world’s first fully automatic file encryption product for the Symbian platform
Helsinki, May 31, 2001 – F-Secure Corporation today introduced F-Secure FileCrypto for Symbian OS, a file encryption application for encrypting information stored in handheld devices. The product provides the strongest available protection against unauthorized access to data in devices using the Symbian OS, a software platform for next generation mobile phones.
Hundreds of thousands of phones and handheld devices are lost or stolen this year alone. When this happens, the stored information is at risk of being disclosed. Unauthorised persons may have tools to read unprotected data directly from the device even when the screen lock is in use, and information on memory cards can usually be accessed with any compatible device. Installing a file encryption application on all devices is the only way to ensure that company information is always protected.
F-Secure FileCrypto for Symbian OS is the world’s first fully automatic file encryption product for the Symbian operating system. Symbian’s licensees include Ericsson, Kenwood, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Psion, Sanyo, Siemens and Sony.
F-Secure FileCrypto for Symbian OS is totally transparent in use. The application automatically encrypts all selected information before storing and decrypts the files again when they are opened, without any need for user intervention. With F-Secure FileCrypto for Symbian OS, confidential information in the memory of the handheld terminal is never stored in a readable form. The application also encrypts all data on external memory cards and it can be used to compress the encrypted files to save memory space.
Ilkka Starck, Vice President of Wireless Security Solutions at F-Secure Corporation said, “Symbian-based devices support many business applications that may require storing confidential corporate information to the device memory. From the security point of view, these wireless devices are just like laptops, only more personal and easier to lose. Our corporate customers have indicated a clear demand to secure the stored data in their handheld devices with reliable encryption solutions. Introducing this new product for the Symbian platform is an important part of our product portfolio of content security applications for wireless devices.”
F-Secure FileCrypto for Symbian OS was introduced in the on-going Symbian WID Summit in London, where it is being demonstrated with Symbian’s Crystal reference design on Symbian platform version 6.0. Commercial versions of the product and equivalent products for other Symbian reference designs will be introduced, as new products using the Symbian OS become available.
The Symbian WID Summit is an exhibition where Symbian Technology Partners present their latest technologies to the Symbian Community and a forum where delegates can gather the most up to date information on the latest technologies being made available for the Symbian Platform.
F-Secure is a member of Symbian’s Embedded Technology Partner program. Symbian’s Embedded Technology Partner program offers leading technology specialists the opportunity to work closely with Symbian in developing enabling technologies and engage in co-marketing campaigns, thus adding value to the Symbian platform. Symbian will also assist Technology Partners in engaging directly with Symbian’s licensees, enabling rapid time-to-market for a wide range of smartphones and communicators.
