ICSA Labs Announces First Testing and Certification Program For Network Intrusion Detection Systems

RESTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 19, 2001–

The Security Industry’s Central Authority for Product Standards and Testing to Certify Network Intrusion Detection Products, Measuring for

Functionality and Compliance

TruSecure(R) Corporation, the leader in information security assurance, today announced that its ICSA(R) Labs division will offer the industry’s first and only continuously deployed testing and certification program for Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) to test the functionality and compliance of intrusion detection products. The NIDS Certification Program offers an independent and comprehensive process that vigorously tests, assesses and validates the security of intrusion detection systems relied upon by corporations and public entities.

“The independent certification offered by ICSA Labs provides CA customers with valuable confirmation that CA security solutions will deliver the integrity, performance and standards compliance they need to effectively and efficiently protect their eBusiness operations,” said Barry Keyes, vice president, eTrust solutions, Computer Associates. “As an ISO 9002-certified company, CA is particularly interested in taking advantage of trusted, independent quality assurance mechanisms such as the ICSA Network Intrusion Detection Certification Program.”

The new ICSA Labs certification program will test for the following:

— Detection of events which are meaningful at the present time

— Restriction of false-positive alarm events to a reasonable threshold

— Logging of events in a consistent and useful manner

— Performance in voluminous traffic environments

“ICSA Labs, working alongside the Intrusion Detection Systems Consortium (IDSC) and industry analysts, has developed a rigorous set of criteria for validating one of the most critical components of a company’s security program,” said George Japak, vice president of ICSA Labs. “ICSA certification is the standard by which security offerings are tested, adding credibility and validity to more than 95% of today’s products.”

Intrusion detection systems, long a subject of theoretical research and development, are gaining mainstream popularity as companies move more of their critical business processes to the Internet. An intrusion detection system can provide advance knowledge of attacks or intrusion attempts by detecting an intruder’s actions. Intrusion detection systems are an increasingly powerful component of an organization’s fight to keep its critical information and systems secure.

ICSA Labs is an independent organization that today certifies more than 95% of the security industry’s anti-virus software, PC and network firewalls, cryptography, and IPSec products. ICSA is the undisputed central authority on product standards and testing and is now bringing that expertise and credibility to NIDS products.

ICSA labs formed the Intrusion Detection Systems Consortium in 1998 to provide product developers an open forum within which they could work toward common goals. These goals include educating end-users, influencing industry standards and maintaining product and marketing integrity. Members meet on a quarterly basis and participate in ongoing discussions and cooperative projects such as criteria development, buyer’s guides and white papers. Membership is open to any commercial developer of intrusion detection and vulnerability assessment products. Contact Scott Markle smarkle@icsalabs.com or visit http://www.icsalabs.com for details.
