IDC Reports McAfee as Worldwide Anti-Virus Market Share Leader for the Fourth Consecutive Year

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 16 /PRNewswire/ — For the fourth consecutive year, IDC (International Data Corp.) reports McAfee, a division of Network Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA), as the number one market share leader of anti-virus software worldwide. In the recently published “Worldwide Antivirus Software Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005” report, IDC cites McAfee as the overall leader in anti-virus software with 29% market share.

While the report accounts for enterprise and consumer markets combined, McAfee’s primary business is in the enterprise space. IDC’s most recent report on the 1999 enterprise anti-virus market, placed McAfee in the dominant position with 45% of the market, compared to the next closest competitor with 19%. IDC has not released the enterprise breakdown for 2000.

“Network Associates’ McAfee division has clearly established itself as the market share leader in protecting businesses from Internet viruses,” said Brian Burke, research analyst in IDC’s Internet Security program. “Viruses continue to plague enterprises around the world, and the McAfee anti-virus software and services will continue to play an instrumental role in combating the virus threat across the entire enterprise.”

IDC’s “Worldwide Antivirus Software Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005” report measures revenue and market share percentages for several individual security markets, and provides historical data, a five-year forecast, and discussion of key trends for the anti-virus security market as a whole.

“More and more enterprise customers are protecting themselves from Internet viruses with McAfee’s anti-virus policy management tools and new McAfee ASaP services,” said Michael Callahan, director of product marketing for McAfee, the anti-virus division of Network Associates. “McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator technology enables corporate customers to self-manage and report on hundreds-of-thousands of desktops from a single location, as well as provide reporting information on competitors products. Alternatively, customers are quickly adopting McAfee ASaP managed services across their entire corporation or as a supplement to their self-managed protection.”
