IDC Declares Trend Micro Worldwide Leader in Server-Based Antivirus Solutions

CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sept. 13, 2001–

With Worldwide Market Shares of 63% in Internet Gateway and 31% for the Groupware Market, Trend Micro Positioned as Foremost Provider of

Server-Based Antivirus Solutions for the Enterprise

According to a recently published report from International Data Corporation (IDC), Trend Micro Inc. (Nasdaq:TMIC)(TSE:4704) dominates the antivirus market as the worldwide leader in server-based antivirus software sales, including Internet gateway (Web server) and Groupware virus protection. The study by IDC titled, “Antivirus Software: A Segmentation of the Market,” follows an earlier July 2001, IDC report titled, “Worldwide Anti-virus Software Market Forecast and Analysis, 2000-2001,” which found Trend Micro to be the fastest growing antivirus vendor with an annual growth rate of 51% in the year 2000.

The report determined Trend Micro to be the worldwide market leader for the year 2000 in the following segments of the antivirus industry:

— No. 1 in the overall Antivirus Server market with 33% market share

— No. 1 in the Groupware market with 31% market share

— No. 1 in the Internet gateway (Web server) market with 63% market share

“Our findings speak for themselves…Trend Micro dominates the server-based antivirus market,” said Brian Burke, senior research analyst at IDC’s Internet Security division. “Having introduced the world to the first server level virus protection, Trend Micro is known for its expertise in protecting the enterprise network from viruses and other malicious code. We expect to see the same innovative solutions and strong growth rate from Trend Micro in the years to come, positioning the Company to take advantage of the server-based antivirus market’s expected boom.”

According to the recent IDC report, server-based revenue sales will far surpass that of desktop in the coming years. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for desktop antivirus is projected to decline 4% from 2000 to 2005. Unlike the desktop market, server-based antivirus solutions are expected to be the most dominant share of the antivirus industry with 45%. Revenue for this segment is expected to increase from approximately $366 million in 2000 to $1, 247 million in 2005.

Steve Chang, CEO of Trend Micro said, “We are thrilled with these results! It is quite gratifying to see our vision and strategy validated by this well-respected group of industry analysts. InterScan VirusWall and ScanMail are clearly the enterprise antivirus solution of choice, making Trend Micro the industry standard for server-based virus protection around the world.

“With an overall 33% market share, we are currently the worldwide market leader for server-based antivirus solutions, a segment of the industry that is expected to grow at an outstanding rate over the next five years. We plan to fully capitalize on that opportunity,” Chang concluded.
