McAfee.com Launches Security Solution for IIS Web Servers

Product Designed to Protect IIS Servers Against the W32.Nimda worm, Code Red Worm and Similar Internet Threats

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ — McAfee.com (Nasdaq: MCAF), a leading provider of Web security services, today announced the launch of SecureIIS, a Web security service designed to proactively protect Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services) Web servers from destructive viruses, trojans, worms and hacker attacks. SecureIIS gives administrators a strong, regularly updated Web security solution that systematically analyzes incoming and outgoing Web server data and Web server processes for possible security breaches to help protect against and prevent loss of data, server downtime and other damaging consequences.

Early Tuesday, system administrators reported a mass-emailing worm known as “W32.Nimda” (also known as “W32.Minda”). This worm reportedly attacks 16 known vulnerabilities in IIS servers, including the security hole left by the recent Code Red II worm. This worm may cause Internet slowdowns, and email servers and Web sites to crash. Infected Web sites may also display a Web page prompting users to download an Outlook file containing the Nimda worm. Nimda uses a number of self-replication techniques, including network share exploits, to maximize its infection rate.

SecureIIS from McAfee.com protects against entire classes of hack attacks, rather than looking for specific and known attack signatures. In this way, SecureIIS is able to protect against future intrusions before they are discovered. Unlike any other security tools, such as intrusion detection systems and network firewalls, the ability to protect against general classes of attack gives administrators comfort that their IIS servers are protected against new worms and similar forms of attack.

“Recent attacks against IIS servers are a clear example of the importance of having a multi-layered digital defense strategy to protect Web servers as well as desktops,” said Srivats Sampath, president and CEO, McAfee.com. “With SecureIIS protecting servers, and firewall and anti-virus protection on PCs, we give system administrators a powerful, multi-tiered solution to guard their servers and PCs against various Internet threats.”

SecureIIS from McAfee.com, is designed to protect the approximately eight million servers running the IIS Web server application. IIS, bundled with Microsoft’s Windows(R) NT, 2000 and XP operating systems, has gained notoriety through the recent discovery of significant security vulnerabilities that make it susceptible to attack and penetration by hackers. The recent Code Red Worm leveraged one of these vulnerabilities to propagate and infect almost a million servers worldwide.

SecureIIS, designed to protect IIS based servers from just such attacks, was able to protect against Code Red even before it was discovered, quickly making the product an essential utility for ensuring the sanctity of Windows NT, 2000 or XP based servers.

Combined with existing McAfee business solutions, which include industrial-strength versions of anti-virus and firewall protection for file servers, gateways and desktops, SecureIIS gives system administrators a comprehensive set of Web security solutions to protect against viruses, hackers and other Internet threats from the server to the desktop level. SecureIIS from McAfee.com is available immediately. SRP for Secure IIS is $695 USD and includes updates and upgrades for the first year. For more information visit: http://corporate.mcafee.com .
