Network Associates Granted New U.S. Patent for Updating Anti-Virus Over The Internet

New Patented Updating Technology Delivers Reliable Anti-Virus Protection To McAfee Customers

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ —

Network Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA) today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted the company United States Patent number 6,269,456 for its technology invention in the field of updating anti-virus software over the Internet. The anti-virus updating technology described in United States Patent 6,296,456, entitled “Method and System for Providing Automated Updating and Upgrading of Antivirus Applications Using a Computer Network,” further distinguishes the company’s McAfee brand anti-virus solutions from other anti-virus products and vendors. According to a particular example of the newly patented technology, updated anti-virus files are automatically pushed over the Internet from McAfee, or another source, to a local distribution server within a customer’s network. Files are then pushed from the distribution server to additional servers and desktops within the customer network.

The patented technology also encompasses retrieving information about a current anti-virus file installed on a client computer to determine if it is up to date. If an updated anti-virus file supersedes the current anti-virus file, then the updated anti-virus file is transferred to the client computer over the Internet.

“McAfee leads the industry in developing technology for updating anti-virus solutions and software using the Internet,” said Gene Hodges, co-inventor of U.S. Patent 6,269,456 and president of the McAfee division of Network Associates, Inc. “Our patented technology provides McAfee customers with reliable and easy-to-manage virus protection they have come to expect from the industry-leading McAfee brand.”
