Zone Labs Sues Sygate for Patent Infringement Legal Filing Seeks to Protect Intellectual Property Created by Zone Labs

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nov. 15, 2001–Zone Labs Inc., a leading creator of Internet security solutions, today announced that it has filed a patent infringement complaint against Sygate in the federal district court for the Northern District of California. In its filing, the San Francisco company alleges that Sygate Technologies, Inc. is infringing upon U.S. Patent No. 5,987,611 and seeks an injunction to prevent Sygate from continuing the infringement as well as monetary damages.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Patent No. 5,987,611 to Zone Labs on November 16, 1999 for managing and controlling access to open networks such as the Internet. Zone Labs utilizes the technology underlying this patent as the basis for its enterprise security solutions. Zone Labs filed its patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on May 6, 1997, based upon a provisional patent application filed December 31, 1996. In the complaint, Zone Labs has alleged that Sygate’s manufacture, use, distribution and sale of the Sygate “Secure Enterprise” product infringes Zone Labs Patent No. 5,987,611. Zone Labs has retained Morgan Chu of Irell & Manella LLP to represent it in the litigation against Sygate.

“We believe Zone Labs’ patented technology is an important asset and is reflected in the quality products and solutions that we build,” said Irfan Salim, president and chief operating officer of Zone Labs. “Our investments in research and invention form the foundation for our innovative products which provide security for millions of Internet-connected PCs in large enterprises, remote offices and homes.”
