IDC Confirms Trend Micro is Worldwide Leader in Server-Based Antivirus Software Market for Second Consecutive Year

Trend Micro grows fastest worldwide among top three antivirus vendors at 31% year over year

Cupertino, CA, August 30, 2002 – According to a recently published report from International Data Corporation (IDC), Trend Micro (Nasdaq: TMIC, TSE: 4704), continues to lead the worldwide market in server-based antivirus software sales, and maintains its leadership positions in Internet gateway and email server virus protection. The study by IDC, entitled “Antivirus Software 2002: A segmentation of the Market,” confirmed Trend Micro as the worldwide market leader for the second year in a row in the following segments:

#1 in the overall antivirus server market with 27% market share
#1 in the Internet gateway market with 41% market share
#1 in the email server market with 23% market share

“Once again, Trend Micro has clearly established itself as the leader in protecting businesses from the damage caused by hybrid or mixed-mode virus attacks, as its strength at the gateway and email server shows,” said Brian Burke, senior research analyst in IDC’s Internet Security program. “And with the announcement of Trend Micro(tm) Enterprise Protection Strategy earlier this year, Trend Micro continues to build upon the excellence of its products and services to provide businesses with an innovative way to manage the increasing sophistication of these threats. Because of this, and its extremely high growth rate, we expect that Trend Micro will continue to lead the charge against viruses and malicious content to protect the enterprise.”

According to the recent IDC report, of the top three antivirus vendors, who together represent over 70% of the worldwide antivirus software market, Trend Micro grew the fastest with a 31% growth rate year over year. This figure is more than double that of the antivirus industry as a whole, which is expected to grow at a 15.3% CAGR between 2001and 2006. The report also found that server-based antivirus offerings are expected to maintain the most dominant share of the antivirus industry at 44%. Additionally, revenue for this segment is expected to increase from approximately $508 million in 2001 to $1.5 billion in 2006.

“Trend Micro is clearly the market leader in server-based protection, which is why we selected them,” said J.J. Seely, Systems Engineer at Oregon State University. “We are currently using ScanMail(tm) for Microsoft Exchange 2000 for our email servers, which offers the performance and scalability we need for our messaging environment. We have full confidence in Trend Micro’s leadership, expertise, and technology, and believe they can deliver the protection we need against the increasingly damaging threats that are out there.”

“We are thrilled to be number one again in the server-based antivirus marketplace and to be recognized as a world leader by a renowned industry analyst firm such as IDC,” said Steve Chang, Chairman and CEO of Trend Micro. “This report confirms that Trend Micro InterScan(tm) VirusWall(tm) and ScanMail are clearly still the enterprise antivirus products of choice for the Internet gateway and email server markets, respectively. We fully plan to capitalize on our current market position to ensure continued leadership in this area.”

In addition to its position in server-based virus protection, the report also shows that Trend Micro’s worldwide desktop antivirus market share increased 78% year over year. Chang attributes this growth to the company’s success in promoting a multi-tiered approach to virus protection.

“It is hardly surprising that we made progress in this segment,” continued Chang. “We have always had a good desktop antivirus base, especially in Asia where we own a majority of the market. It makes good business sense to capitalize on this success and expand our penetration into other regions. Also, our desktop growth combined with our continued strength at the Internet gateway and email server, will ultimately allow us to offer more and more customers the full benefits of Trend Micro Enterprise Protection Strategy. Customers using Trend Micro products at multiple points of their network will be able to benefit the most from this unique approach to virus protection.”

Announced in May of this year, Trend Micro Enterprise Protection Strategy redefines virus protection by providing customers with a flexible architecture for an innovative approach to proactive outbreak response and management. Through the use of Trend Micro products and services, customers can utilize centralized deployment of outbreak-specific detection, protection, assessment, and cleanup strategies throughout the network in real-time.
