Oror Worm – Highest Threat Levels Since Bugbear

Malicious viruses are released every day, some proving more threatening than others. Today, Panda Software reported maximum threat levels on variants of the Oror Worm. Oror is a dangerous new worm which deletes all of the files in the infected computer’s hard disk, as well as every network drive accessible from the infected machine. It also looks for files of antivirus applications in order to eliminate them.

Panda Software, a leading antivirus software producer, warns that the recent outbreak of the Oror worm has been assigned a maximum threat level of 5 out of a possible 5, exceeding those of Bugbear which has dominated the virus lists. Today Panda Software released news that new variants of Oror reached maximum threat levels because of its potential for devastation upon infection. For further information on this virus, go to Panda’s Virus Encyclopedia.

Panda’s Chief Technical Officer, Patrick Hinojosa, issued notice today of a pending dangerous situation. “This is not an alert at this time, but a warning to keep your eyes open for potential further developments”.

Hinojosa stated that customers using Panda Antivirus have not reported infection, due largely to the fact they are protected by Panda’s daily signature file updates. These updates contain a generic built in detector that silently eliminates this type of virus before they can even show up in a user’s system.

People who are running antivirus software that cannot generically detect this type of virus are at serious risk. Computer users are advised to immediately install a good antivirus, because the damage caused by an infection can be devastating, deleting all files off the hard drive.

In order to avoid infection, Panda recommends that computer users update their antivirus software immediately. For those without antivirus software, individuals can use ActiveScan, Panda’s free online virus scanner at .
