Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite Brings High Performance Gateway Protection for Enterprise Customers

First Dedicated HTTP/FTP Security Solution Now Available for Microsoft(tm) Windows(tm) and Solaris(tm) Platforms

Cupertino, California – September 8, 2003 – Trend Micro, Inc. (TSE: 4704, NASDAQ: TMIC), a leader in network antivirus and Internet content security software and services, today announced the immediate availability of Trend Micro(tm) InterScan(tm) Web Security Suite for the Microsoft(tm) Windows(tm) operating platform. Also available on the Solaris(tm) platform, Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite is the first gateway antivirus solution to focus on HTTP and FTP traffic protocols, bringing high performance gateway protection to enterprise customers.

“Trend Micro holds the unique position among today’s antivirus vendors as the leader in the server and gateway antivirus market, having led the way for security at the gateway level of an enterprise network,” commented Brian Burke, Research Manager at IDC. “Trend Micro appears to be the only major antivirus vendor entirely committed to developing next generation HTTP gateway solutions and their vision and commitment is exemplified with the release of InterScan Web Security Suite.”

Designed to handle the daily traffic burdens of large organizations with minimal disruption to Web users, InterScan Web Security Suite scans for viruses and other malicious code at the HTTP/FTP gateway, protecting standalone HTTP servers and ICAP protocol Web caching servers. Based on testing completed by Veritest, a testing division of Lionbridge Technologies, Inc., Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite outperforms competitors’ products by up to 7 times, scanning over 4 million bytes of data per second (compared to 600,000 bytes per second from another leading antivirus vendor). Minimal delays in Web page loading compared to unprotected HTTP traffic allows organizations to run antivirus protection that is nearly transparent to end users.

The popularity of Internet-based mail services means even organizations with SMTP protection are still exposed to Internet worms and other threats by employees that use HTTP-based email accounts, such as “Yahoo” or “Hotmail”, which already have over a hundred million subscribers. Separate Web and messaging security solutions offer greater flexibility and protection to organizations structured with specialized policies and administrative rights for HTTP and SMTP traffic.

“Offering protocol-specific products at the Internet gateway allows Trend Micro to deliver high performance, scalable solutions that meet a wide variety of customer needs,” said John Maddison, Product Group Manager for gateway products at Trend Micro. “Now customers can get the benefits of such Enterprise Protection Strategy services, like Outbreak Prevention Services, while still allowing functional areas within enterprise IT organizations to focus on their segments of the network.”

Under Trend Micro Enterprise Protection Strategy, Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite integrates with other Trend Micro products and services, such as Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security Suite for SMTP scanning, to deliver a flexible yet centrally managed set of tools for outbreak prevention, management, and reporting. Enterprise Protection Strategy focuses on helping customers manage the impact of threats to productivity and information assets associated with the outbreak lifecycle through a complete, end-to-end security strategy, including the ability to block suspicious HTTP, FTP, and SMTP traffic at the Internet gateway to prevent outbreak occurrences.

Since its introduction of gateway antivirus products in 1996, Trend Micro has become a recognized innovator and thought leader in the enterprise space, and was recently named market share leader for the gateway antivirus market for the fourth year in a row by IDC. The company plans to continue adapting to customer needs and setting the stage for future Web security features.
