Network Associates Introduces Essential New Spam Protection Features in Latest Version of McAfee SpamKiller for Consumers

Award-Winning Product Now Features Multi-Tiered Filtering Engine, User-Specific Learning, Scam Filters, and Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express Integration to Help Protect the Entire Family Against Email Spam

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Network Associates, Inc. (NYSE: NET), the leading provider of intrusion prevention solutions, today unveiled the latest version of its market-leading consumer spam prevention program, McAfee SpamKiller(TM) Home 5.0. The new version of McAfee SpamKiller applies nearly two years of spam protection experience to create the most advanced spam protection product on the market, with a myriad of family-friendly features not found in competitive offerings.

This is the third release of McAfee SpamKiller that further extends the product’s leadership position with several enhancements and additions including: multi-user support to help protect families from email spam containing inappropriate content, scam filters to help protect users from falling victim to identity theft email scams, and Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express integration for increased usability.

“Benefiting from the experience gained through nearly two years of successfully protecting our users against this growing problem, we’ve learned that having an application that tailors itself to an individual’s or a family’s needs is absolutely necessary in the fight against spam,” said Lisa Henderson, vice president of marketing, with the McAfee Security Consumer division at Network Associates. “McAfee SpamKiller not only helps filter and protect against spam, it also protects children from exposure to email threats that may otherwise go unnoticed with single-user programs.”
New product features in McAfee SpamKiller Home 5.0 include:

— Multi-User Support for Family PCs enables the SpamKiller program’s filtering, learning and quarantine access to be controlled on a per-user basis. This is especially important for families running multi-user PCs and can help prevent the false identification of legitimate email as spam. The tight SpamKiller integration with Windows XP and 2000 also allows parents and administrators to control access to quarantined spam and program settings.
— Scam Filters help block two of the largest problems for email users — security hoaxes and potentially fraudulent email. As it is common for people to forward virus hoaxes and scams to friends, family and colleagues, the scam filters in McAfee SpamKiller detect and block these messages even if they come from someone on the user’s Friends List.
— Microsoft Outlook/Express Toolbar Integration gives users of Outlook Express 6.0 and Outlook 98, 2000 and XP quick and easy access to McAfee SpamKiller functions such as blocking spam email, adding friends and viewing quarantined email directly from within their email application.
— Multi-layered Learning is necessary for spam protection products to be truly effective. Running in a multi-user single PC environment, McAfee SpamKiller applies its learning methods on a per-user basis. The multi-layered learning in McAfee SpamKiller incorporates the following:

— Machine-Based Learning means the software has the ability to train itself by continuously examining and analyzing what it blocks and what is indisputably identified as legitimate email.
— User-Based Learning allows McAfee SpamKiller to learn what each individual user considers to be spam email and trains its own core filtering engine as users block unfiltered spam or rescue false positives.
— Community-Based Learning offers the ability for a user to report spam back to McAfee for analysis. The probability engine within McAfee SpamKiller will learn from this user feedback and send out updates to users.

— Dictionary Attack Filters give McAfee SpamKiller the unique ability to block spam emails sent using known dictionary attack methods. This advanced pattern matching technology helps block dictionary attack spam regardless of the content of the message.
— Spam Reporting allows users to report spam to their ISPs, authorities, or directly to McAfee. Once reported, the spam email is placed in McAfee’s internal spam analysis process where it will help in the creation of updates. As such, single users reporting spam can help protect the entire user base by regularly reporting new spam.
— Convenient One-Click Block automatically generates a sophisticated spam filter based on an email tagged by the user as spam. Users can access this feature from the Outlook/Outlook Express toolbar as well as from within the McAfee SpamKiller client.
— Foreign Language Email Blocking offers the ability to identify and block foreign language email during the filtering process. Users simply need to select which languages they would like automatically blocked and McAfee SpamKiller will prevent foreign-language spam from infiltrating their inboxes by blocking emails in selected languages all together.
