SafeNet Announces Sentinel UltraPro Software Protection Keys

Baltimore, Maryland, September 21, 2004 – SafeNet, Inc. (NASDAQ: SFNT), setting the standard for information security, today announced the release of Sentinel UltraPro Software Protection Keys. Building on the success of the Sentinel SuperPro Keys, the world’s most widely deployed software protection key, UltraPro adds significant new features that enhance security, ease-of-use and evaluation, and reduce time-to-market for software developers.

UltraPro introduces the Business Layer APIT framework to the development community, which enables a dramatic reduction in integration time, facilitates on-time project completion, reduces cost and improves quality, by reducing the opportunities for programming error. SafeNet also introduces Sentinel UltraPro XM for customers requiring enhanced memory.

These new products meet the challenges of software and information providers to balance two critical needs – protection against rising piracy and the requirement for creative ways to license their products to a larger consumer base. SafeNet’s Rights Management Platform, introduced in May of this year, enables an optimal ROI by allowing each customer to deliver, track and enforce its license models, using a solution that suits its particular mix of business, security and licensing needs.

SafeNet is also introducing the next element of the Rights Management Platform – the classification of different levels of security. This provides a framework that allows SafeNet to assist customers and partners to identify their needs and creates the foundation for continued industry innovation. SafeNet is introducing this security and license management framework at the Software Business Conference to be held in San Francisco on September 22-23, 2004.

SafeNet has already taken the lead in bringing government-grade security to the commercial enterprise. Now, SafeNet is uniquely positioned to do the same in the rights management market, with new ideas like Business Layer APIs that will enhance the dialogue between software vendors and technology providers, as well as lead the way to creating cutting-edge solutions for software protection.

“When we formed our Rights Management Business Unit earlier this year, one of our goals was to capitalise on our leadership in the software protection market, by demonstrating innovation and leadership through the introduction of products that meet or exceed the market’s expectations. The release of UltraPro is an early validation of that strategy. It enables our customers to raise the bar on security while utilising our new Business Layer API implementation to speed their integration process,” said Prakash Panjwani, general manager of SafeNet’s Rights Management Unit.

UltraPro Benefits
Fast Deployment of Popular License Models
Business Layer API’s abstract the standard business models, that a software vendor uses to license its applications, and provide a higher level API that can be easily integrated by the developer, without needing to learn a complex set of programming rules. The UltraPro Business Layer API set includes the most popular business models:
Evaluation (or Demo) Licensing
Leasing (or Subscription) Licensing
Metered Licensing

Ease of Use and Evaluation
To enhance ease of use and evaluation, the UltraPro Developers Toolkit has been designed around a project-based file structure that allows developers to easily create security and license designs. Project files facilitate design management and project maintenance, and allow developers to quickly implement a new design based on pre-defined templates or a customer’s own project files. Development time is reduced and quality improved. Security

UltraPro includes 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm for encryption, a widely deployed public algorithm generally acknowledged throughout the industry for its superior level of encryption security. Included are new techniques to counter commonly known attacks, raising the bar on overall security of the solution.

Key Management
UltraPro’s Key Manager feature set enables developers to program multiple keys at once and to customise license models at the production stage. In addition, developers can securely assign the fulfillment and upgrade of keys to their distributors or resellers. Key Manager provides the framework for planned future enhancements including license tracking, upgrade management, inventory tracking and billing.
