Utimaco Wins Major Contract Worth Euros 2.6 Million

Oberursel (Germany) and London (UK), 7 November 2005 : The Transaction Security division of Utimaco has won a major contract worth Euros 2.6 million for its CryptoServer security module. In agreement with the client, a consortium that will implement Utimaco’s hardware security modules in a large project, no further details of the project will be released.

CryptoServer is a security module that encapsulates cryptographic functions and keys in a secured hardware module. It is used in many project solutions to integrate high-performance cryptographic services in business-critical IT processes and to guarantee secure key management. In contrast to pure software solutions, the CryptoServer also enables cryptographic operations, such as the generation and storage of keys and digital signatures, to be performed in an extremely secure way. It is typically used in security-critical applications such as card production (Visa, MasterCard), for road pricing systems, or in Trust Centres.

In addition to certification by the ZKA (German central credit committee) for use in electronic payment traffic in Germany, the CryptoServer now also has FIPS (US Federal Information Processing Standard security standard) 140-2 level 3 certification. This important IT security standard for cryptographic modules applies world-wide, both at governmental level, and also in commerce.

Historically, CryptoServer has primarily been used in projects, for special areas of application. Further standardisation of the CryptoServer security module is planned in 2005/2006 and to market it as a product via OEM partners.
