Guide to Online Antivirus Solutions Part 6: ESET Online Scanner

Internet connections are getting faster every day, so online antivirus solutions transformed from proof of concepts into actual quality security services. Lately I have been playing with some leading online antivirus products and here are my thoughts.

After Panda Security NanoScan and TotalScan, Trend Micro’s HouseCall,   Kaspersky Online Scanner, Norman SandBox Malware Analyzer and BitDefender Online Scanner this week we are taking a look at Eset’s online AV solution.

The ESET Online Scanner (www.eset.com/onlinescan) is a user friendly free tool which can be used for removing malware while you are surfing then Web. It uses the same ThreatSense technology and signatures as ESET NOD32 Antivirus, and is always up-to-date.

After starting the ESET Online Scanner, it needs to initialize and download the latest virus signatures. This procedure takes around a minute or so.

The scanner is now fully functional and it offers the user two options. The first is related to the dangerous files – the scanner can delete them (disinfection is not possible via the online antivirus scanner) and the second one gives the possibility of detecting potential unwanted programs (PUPs).

After the scan is done, if there were any malicious file detected in the process the windows automatically turns red.

As I configured the scanner to remove malicious files, these two pieces of malware were detected and deleted from the computer.

ESET Online Scanner is a nice and compact utility for easy disinfection of infected files residing on your computer.
