SIA Privacy Framework gets an update

The Security Industry Association (SIA) released the new SIA Privacy Framework to assist security companies with the development of privacy policies. SIA has updated its framework to address evolving technologies and practices.

“The SIA Privacy Framework serves as a guide for security companies in establishing privacy policies specific to their retention of personally identifiable information and other sensitive data. It illustrates the proactive steps the security industry is already taking in many cases to protect privacy,” said SIA CEO Don Erickson.

Originally released in 2010 and updated in 2014, the SIA Privacy Framework builds on this work by broadly outlining a core set of principles and best practices for privacy protections the industry is working to implement in the deployment of electronic physical security technologies.

The SIA Privacy Framework has three purposes:

  • to serve as a guide for manufacturers, integrators and distributors of electronic physical security technologies;
  • to inform policymakers about how the security industry protects privacy when collecting, securing and storing personally identifiable information; and
  • to help educate end users on the implementation of privacy protections.

The SIA Privacy Framework provides guidance to manufacturers, integrators and distributors of electronic physical security technologies including but not limited to access control devices, biometrics, CCTV, video analysis, IP-based technology and radio frequency identification.
