Mobile first: Security concerns and solutions

The majority of people – 83%, in fact – use their mobile devices to go online. 89% of these users connect to the internet via a mobile device every day. However, their security is severely lacking in almost all aspects.

As advanced as their connectivity is, mobile users rarely know how to ensure their device safety. 28% of users do not even use a screen lock, and nearly half – 40% – only update their OS when it’s convenient. When it comes to more complicated security measures, mobile devices are ultimately forgotten.

While devices that are mostly used at home may stay protected by their internet service providers (ISPs) or security vendors, mobile users take advantage of public wifi that is available freely almost anywhere.

Out of the 54% of those who use public wifi, about 1 in 5 people do not hesitate to use it for shopping, or even banking. Thus, they lose the layer of defense that may or may not be provided on their home network.

Seamless UX Is a prerequisite

As devices get more intuitive, users expect a seamless experience. 75% of consumers expect companies to provide a consistent experience across all platforms. While this need might be met on features such as outward and inward design, as well as other intricate details, security is lagging behind.

Home users are not the only ones valuing protection. Nearly half (48.7% to be precise) business users cite security as the primary premium feature they would be willing to pay more for. That would translate to 30% fee increase.

2018: The Year of privacy

One of the reasons why privacy is trending is General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It is going to force many companies to make rapid changes concerning their customer security and privacy. GDPR holds a lot of power since it requires compliance from all businesses that have European clients.

At home, experienced users are already taking action to help ensure their privacy. For example, a new DNS encryption service Cloudflare managed to acquire nearly 4% of the total market share in just two weeks since its launch on April 1st (data provided by CUJO AI).

Such impressive results help portray the fact that many users are aware of the need for better protection. While six in ten people reported that they would like to do more to ensure their privacy, not all of them know the best ways to do exactly that.

Unfortunately, people are not often provided with built-in legacy solutions in their devices that offer a broad spectrum of security solutions.

While the devices may get a simple base of protection (such as strict app monitoring by iOS, or the OS updates by both of the most popular operating system providers), that is not enough to combat the ever-increasing online threats.
