New NetScreen-200 Series Features Extend Security, Reduce Capital and Operational Costs

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 27, 2003—NetScreen Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: NSCN) today announced new features for the NetScreen-200 series appliances, enabling enterprises and carriers to leverage a single device to extend firewall protection and virtual private network capabilities to multiple network segments.

The new features allow administrators to create partitioned, “virtual” network environments with distinct security policies defined and applied to meet the requirements of departments within an enterprise or end customers utilizing managed services. With the new features, the NetScreen-204 and NetScreen-208 appliances can support up to 18 security zones and 32 virtual LAN (VLAN) connections. VLAN support provides the ability to logically, rather than physically, segment the network, whereby distinct security policies can be applied to each VLAN. Security zones allow an administrator to group interfaces—both virtual and physical—into an internal, logical network and define policies for each network partition.

Leveraging these capabilities, network administrators can extend security throughout a network without purchasing and installing multiple physical devices – simplifying network integration, and reducing management time and costs.

The security zone and VLAN virtualization features were originally developed for NetScreen’s high-end systems – the NetScreen-500, NetScreen-1000 and NetScreen-5000 Series. Extending the virtualization capabilities to the NetScreen-200 appliance series provides enterprises and carriers the ability to deploy these sophisticated features at sites with lower performance and capacity requirements.

“Improving the functionality of security devices for greater extensibility and efficiency will be crucial to preserving IT resources and saving costs,” said David Flynn, vice president of marketing at NetScreen. “Extending virtualization functionality to the NetScreen-200 series appliances demonstrates just one way NetScreen eases management and deployment for administrators, minimizing time and costs associated with pushing security deeper into the network.”

The new ScreenOS release providing the virtualization functionality for the NetScreen-204 and -208 appliances, version 4.0.2, is now available. For more information, visit: www.netscreen.com/.
