OKENA Introduces StormWatch 2.1 Intrusion Prevention Software for Security Without Signatures

WALTHAM, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 14, 2002–

StormWatch 2.1 Adds More Policies for “Out-of-the-Box” Protection,

Speeds Installation to 30 Minutes

OKENA(TM), Inc., the leading developer of intrusion prevention software, today announced the enhanced version 2.1 of StormWatch(TM). This new release of OKENA’s flagship product provides a modular security policy format. The modular approach makes it easy to enable desired security features with a “point and click” interface. For example, server lockdown and IIS Web server protection can be enabled by simply checking the corresponding boxes. StormWatch 2.1 also makes the user-friendly installation process even easier and faster. StormWatch 2.1 automates the development of agent kits and the review of policies. Installation, from loading the software CD to complete enterprise-caliber intrusion prevention, now takes less than 30 minutes.

Instead of reacting to a problem after it has been detected and caused damage, OKENA StormWatch takes immediate action to prevent the problem from causing the damage. StormWatch intrusion prevention does not require signature updates or reactive measures to protect against attacks. Click-of-the-button default policies provide the ideal application defense mechanism for repelling both commonly known and new attacks. StormWatch protects desktops, servers, networks and the most popular applications from buffer overflows, syn flood attacks, Trojan horses, network worms and even software security holes for which users may not have downloaded a patch.

“OKENA’s approach to providing security without signatures proved successful in stopping every common attack that hit in 2001. With more pre-configured policies, StormWatch is greater prepared to continue preventing the continuing barrage of intrusions that we’re certain to face in 2002,” said Shaun McConnon, chief executive officer at OKENA. “Solving the pain and revenue losses that organizations feel in battling each new attack as it breaks was our first priority. Now that StormWatch has proven it can proactively prevent new attacks, the latest release is focused on extending protection and making installation even quicker and easier.”

For added security, protection can be further customized to meet unique business needs or to protect new or proprietary applications. StormWatch 2.1 features enhanced plug-in support for its companion product StormFront(TM). StormFront analyzes the behavior of critical business applications and then generates secure operating policies that plug into StormWatch. Combining the two products offers a comprehensive approach to intrusion prevention for easy protection of common applications as well as custom or legacy software. Because StormFront automatically builds StormWatch policies based on observed application behavior, security and IT administrators are not required to build their own policies.

OKENA’s INCORE(TM) architecture powers its entire line of products, correlating file, network, registry and COM functions in order to define and enforce application behavior. Application policies prevent intrusions from executing their malicious code by denying aberrant application behavior. By focusing on the behavior of systems and applications, OKENA intrusion prevention protects enterprises against the new wave of attacks that breach traditional security perimeters and attacks that bypass signature-based technologies.

In a recent report entitled, “Technology Migration to Intrusion Protection Systems,” dated November 19, 2001, Michael Rasmussen, senior industry analyst at Giga Information Group, states: “Intrusion protection applications offer more value by protecting a host as opposed to pure detection capabilities. Why only detect when you can provide protection as well? Vendors in this space are providing products that protect systems and applications beyond the standard detection capabilities of the past.”
