BindView Unveils Multi Platform Password Self Service Solution

Web-based Password Reset Product Helps Organizations Reduce Administration Costs by Empowering End Users

HOUSTON – Sept. 3, 2002 – BindView Corporation (NASDAQ: BVEW), a leading provider of IT security management solutions, today unveiled its new Password Self Service solution, a Web-based application that allows individual users to reset their own user passwords and unlock their accounts, helping organizations save valuable time for both its system administrators and users. Continuing its commitment to providing users with solutions that help secure and automate processes associated with managing information technology infrastructures, BindView Password Self Service can help reduce costs and produce immediate ROI for organizations. Available as a standalone product, Password Self Service can also be used with BindView’s bv-Admin or bv-Control products to help further ensure the integrity and compliance of IT infrastructures while lowering the costs associated with maintaining and managing those systems.

“Password Self Service has the capability of empowering our end-users to take a piece of account management into their own hands and minimize the downtime they experience waiting for password to be reset,” stated Mark E Chambers, project manager Enterprise Infrastructure, Petroleum Geo-Services. “Since we started testing the self-service password reset functionality, we have been impressed with the ease of use and functionality. We have mostly implemented this product to give our Unix community a simple tool to change their Windows passwords from a web browser. This will bring a dramatic reduction in the number of help desk calls our end-users log, freeing up valuable help desk resources to focus on more strategic IT infrastructure issues.”

BindView Password Self Service provides users with a fast and secure method to restore access to their business critical resources. Typically, when a user loses access to resources – due to a forgotten password or locked account – they must call the help desk to regain access. The Password Self Service solution enhances BindView customers’ ability to proactively administer their networks in the most cost-effective manner, reducing the workload of help desk personnel and helping to minimize the downtime end-users experience due to forgotten passwords. Employing a two-step identification process including an administrator-designed quiz, users can visit the Password Self Service Web page from any Internet connection and reset their own password or unlock their account.

Key Features of Password Self Service include:
Web-based access to accounts – Delivers self-service administration with no client side installation, reducing the total cost of ownership and increasing ease of use. Additionally, Web-based access provides administrators with a more a secure, distributed environment via controlled and encrypted capabilities.
Multi Platform Support – Ensures that supported platforms do not become out of synch during the password-reset operation. Because many organizations support a number of operating systems, Password Self Service can be used to update passwords in multiple directories in a single operation. User identities may be tied to Active Directory, Windows NT, Microsoft SQL Server, Novell eDirectory, IBM AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris and Linux.
Flexible user identification – Supports a number of methods for user authorization within the network, including e-mail address, account name, or a custom attribute such as employee ID number, allowing organizations to choose the most flexible and reliable system for their environment.
Group Restrictions -Provides administrators with control over user access to Password Self Service functionality, by limiting access to a designated domain or only to members of a certain group.

Extensive auditing – Provides administrators with an audit trail of all user actions performed in Password Self Service. “Password Self Service is a natural evolution of role-based administration and a complementary product to the BindView suite of security management solutions,” stated Bob Tesh solutions marketing director, BindView. “Customers are interested in delegating access rights as far down the organization as can be securely managed. With Password Self Service, we now offer organizations an easy-to-use, cost effective solution to meet their specific needs for role-based capabilities, helping to reduce IT administration costs and improve service.”
