Third of Small Businesses Have no Antivirus Protection

Epidemics like those caused by Blaster and Sobig.F in August can be largely attributed to a lack of user awareness regarding the need for effective protection. In a recent survey by Panda Software*, 38 percent of respondants believed that they didn’t need protection as they didn’t use the Internet much, they only visited trusted sites and only exchanged e-mail with family or friends. Similar trends were revealed by a recent BT Openworld survey, which found that 28 percent of British small and medium enterprises felt that antiviruses and firewalls weren’t important.
This lack of awareness is one of the primary direct causes of inadequate IT security. The international study carried out by Panda Software found that results varied across Europe. While in Spain only just over 30 percent of companies had antivirus software correctly installed and updated, figures in Italy and France were as low as 23 and 20 percent respectively.
The consecuenses of so many computers being defenseless in the face of the threat posed by today’s computer viruses could be hard felt by many SME’s. A widespread epidemic of destructive malicious code would destroy data, hit productivity and cause severe damage to corporate image in the event that companies unwittingly spread the virus to clients and others.
