McAfee Releases Highest Performing Gateway Anti-Virus Appliance to Safeguard Enterprises From Internet Viruses, Including Code Red

New WebShield e500 Scans All Major Internet Protocols; Defends Businesses Against Code Red and SirCam Viruses

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ — McAfee, a division of Network Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA), today announced the immediate availability of its new WebShield e500 anti-virus appliance. The new WebShield e500, outperforming other anti-virus appliances in internal benchmark testing, scans for viruses and malicious code within all major Internet protocols. This includes the SMTP protocol, which is recognized by the ICSA as being responsible for 87% of virus infections such as SirCam, and the HTTP protocol used by the Code Red worm to infect Web servers worldwide.

According to the independent research organization Computer Economics, the impact of the Code Red worm on businesses worldwide is estimated to be $1.2 billion, which accounts for $740 million in clean up, monitoring, and system checking costs, and $450 million dollars in productivity impact. The WebShield e500 intercepts the Code Red worm as it attempts to infect one or more servers.

Customers recognize the versatility and performance of the WebShield e500 appliance and are proactively implementing McAfee’s leading anti-virus technology at their gateway.

“The McAfee e500 appliance will be our frontline of defense against future viruses like the Code Red,” said John Evans, network systems administrator, GGS Information Services. “Implementing the McAfee solution at our firewall will add redundancy to our virus protection and help us secure Internet traffic. The e500 will also help prevent the cost and downtime associated with virus infections.”

“McAfee’s WebShield e500 is ideal for our environment, scanning for viruses in our Internet traffic at the network perimeter,” said Andy Shever, information systems network and telecommunications manager for Lourdes Hospital. “With the e500 appliance, we can avoid future threats like the Code Red and SirCam viruses, which will help keep our productivity at its peak.”

The WebShield e500 Appliance combines high performance hardware and award winning anti-virus software in an integrated appliance. The new appliance offers the ability to scan large volumes of Internet traffic, scanning in excess of 120,000 SMTP messages per hour. The WebShield e500 Appliance resides at the Internet gateway and scans SMTP, FTP, POP3 and HTTP protocols for viruses and malicious Java, ActiveX, or JavaScript code. The new appliance is feature rich with content scanning, updates, remote manageability, alert notification, SPAM blocking, disclaimers, reporting capabilities and McAfee’s award winning anti-virus scanning engine. “McAfee is continuing to lead the market with innovative solutions to combat the threat of viruses, such as development of the WebShield e500 appliance that can defend against Code Red-like attacks,” said Michael Callahan, director of product marketing for McAfee. “McAfee’s e500 appliance looks for malicious code within Internet traffic coming to and from the enterprise, scanning for malicious code within all major Internet protocols used by most businesses.”
