Utimaco Safeware Implements Siemens Biometrics Technology

Integration of Siemens ID Mouse Professional in Utimaco Safeware’s SafeGuard Biometrics Solution

Oberursel, March 19, 2002 – Utimaco Safeware, leading manufacturer of professional solutions for data security and Siemens AG, world leader in IT sector, have jointly developed a security solution based on biometrics and smartcards. This combination of biometrics, authentication and encryption will be presented to the public for the first time at this year’s CeBIT at the Siemens stand (Hall 27 / C32).

For confidential and binding data communications in business processes, partners must be uniquely identified. Biometric identification ensures this and also frees the user from tedious password input. In addition, it is then impossible to forget passwords, since they are no longer in use.

“According to a study by Morgan Keegan & Co., fingerprints provide the most effective biometrics system in terms of accuracy, user comfort and cost” said Rolf Wassermann, Vice President of Utimaco Safeware AG’s Personal Device Security LOB. “With this partnership, Utimaco Safeware will be able to extend its range of solutions by adding the internationally-recognized biometric fingerprint systems produced by Siemens.”

When combined with the Siemens ID Mouse Professional, Utimaco Safeware’s smartcard-based security solutions can be used to implement a consistent company-wide security policy while greatly improving user-friendliness and considerably reducing the total cost of ownership by decreasing the number of calls to support relating to forgotten passwords.

The global solution would be ideal for professional applications such as the healthcare market. For example, in hospitals several persons often use the same terminal. The Siemens ID Mouse Professional allows user-friendly and reliable authentication and guarantees rapid user changeover when combined with Utimaco Safeware’s Secure User Switching.

Utimaco Safeware AG is one of the leading European manufacturers of professional IT security solutions. The security technology and solutions developed by Utimaco Safeware protect the electronic data of companies and government bodies against unauthorized access and guarantees that business processes and administrative procedures in the electronic world are binding and confidential.

Utimaco Safeware’s Personal Device Security LOB supplies technologies and solutions for IT security in the areas of high-level authentication including biometric techniques, encryption and integrity checks. Its products and solutions secure data on the PC, laptop and PDA at the workplace and on the move.

Siemens Biometrics is one of the most important developers and manufacturers of biometric systems and components in the world. Siemens began research in biometric identification at the end of the 1970s. At this time, for example, the company was granted a number of patents for electronic sensors to fingerprint recognition and the basic patent for capacitive fingerprint sensors made from silicon. They were the basis for the world’s first fingerprint sensors which were developed in the Siemens research laboratories in 1997. This work was honored in 1999 when it was nominated for the German Future Prize. Today Siemens is the leading supplier for biometric applications and fingerprint systems and components for the office and consumer markets.
