Region 18 Education Service Center Deploys TippingPoint’s UnityOne Intrusion Prevention System to Block Cyber Threats, Prevent Piracy and Protect Network Integrity

AUSTIN, Texas – April 21, 2004 – TippingPoint Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: TPTI), the leader in intrusion prevention, today announced that Region 18 Education Service Center, which provides Internet access to 32 school districts with over 80,000 users, has purchased UnityOneâ„? Intrusion Prevention Systems to protect their network from cyber threats and piracy. Region 18 Education Service Center also secures Web, e-mail and DNS hosting for the school districts with UnityOne.

Because Region 18 Education Service Center provides Internet access to over 30 school districts with various security policies, TippingPoint’s UnityOne network-based solution proved to be the most effective way to control peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic and prevent cyber attacks.

According to Casey Ritchie, IT coordinator at Region 18 Service Center, “We originally looked at Cisco’s client-based solution, but the cost would have been 10 times the amount for the per-client licensing fees and did not offer P2P protection. UnityOne was the only product we found that effectively met all of our needs. In my opinion, every Internet Service Provider should be required to have one.”

Prior to implementing UnityOne, Region 18 Education Service Center was experiencing an extremely high rate of worms and viruses that would occasionally overload switches and routers, causing them to fail. With UnityOne, cyber threats are blocked and Region 18 Education Service Center’s infrastructure is protected. Ritchie added, “Since we started using UnityOne, worms and viruses are blocked so none of our infrastructure has suffered downtime.”

Region 18 Education Service Center is also using UnityOne to block P2P file sharing due to the legal risk and security risk associated with the download and distribution of copyrighted information. “We can tell by looking at our SMS logs that we have saved a significant amount of bandwidth from blocking P2P and malicious traffic,” said Ritchie.

TippingPoint’s President and COO James Hamilton said, “We commend Region 18 Education Service Center for enhancing network performance, reducing legal risk and increasing cyber security in the services they provide their student and teacher users. It speaks volumes that 32 of 33 school districts have chosen to use Region 18’s Internet service. They clearly understand the demands of the customer and what it takes to be a leading ISP.”

TippingPoint’s UnityOne provides Application Protection, Performance Protection and Infrastructure Protection at gigabit speeds through total packet inspection. Application Protection capabilities provide fast, accurate, reliable protection from internal and external cyber attacks. Through its Infrastructure Protection capabilities, UnityOne protects routers, switches, DNS and other critical infrastructure from targeted attacks and traffic anomalies. UnityOne Performance Protection capabilities enable customers to throttle non-mission critical applications that hijack valuable bandwidth and IT resources, thereby aligning network resources and business-critical application performance.
