SteelEye Technology announces and demonstrates LifeKeeper on IBM eServer OpenPower systems

LinuxWorld, Boston – 15th February 2005 – SteelEye Technology® Inc., an innovator in data and application availability management solutions for Linux and Windows, will today demonstrate LifeKeeperâ„? on IBM Linux® on POWERâ„? systems. Further, SteelEye announces the March 28th general availability of LifeKeeper for the overall Linux on POWER platform and the extension of the LifeKeeper Protected Program to the growing number of ISV applications certified for Linux on POWER system.

The live demonstration will take place within the IBM Partner Pavilion at LinuxWorld-Boston, showcasing a two-node LifeKeeper-enabled cluster of IBM eServer OpenPower 720 systems. Protecting a streaming video application and illustrating the potential for fault-resilient protection of video-on-demand services using LifeKeeper, the demonstration proves LifeKeeper’s ability to provide failure detection and instantaneous recovery of the video stream with no delivery interruption.

“IBM is excited to have SteelEye commit to the Linux on POWER platform and to make available all the proven benefits of LifeKeeper to database and application deployments for our mutual clients,” said Brian Connors, Vice President, Linux on POWER, IBM. “Enterprise deployments of Linux demand a robust server environment as well as data and application protection and disaster recovery of business critical applications. IBM, with the Linux on POWER platform, and SteelEye, with over 4000 servers under LifeKeeper protection world-wide, have proven capable of delivering enterprise class solutions.”

SteelEye actively seeks adopters of Linux on POWER with a view to their participation in an early release program. LifeKeeper for Linux on POWER supports both RedHat Advanced Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and provides off-the-shelf protection for Apache, DB2 UDB, NFS, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SAMBA, Sybase, mySAP and other applications and services. Also available will be the LifeKeeper Software Development Kit which lets customers or ISVs easily add protection for custom or third party applications.

SteelEye also announces the extension of the recently launched LifeKeeper Protected Program to include ISVs with applications on the Linux on POWER platform.

“Bringing LifeKeeper for Linux to the POWER platform made absolute sense to SteelEye in its drive to service the enterprise datacenter with unparalleled protection for business critical systems on Linux. IBM’s overall success with the POWER series and the performance and scalability that the Linux on POWER initiative brings points to Linux on POWER being a strategic platform for Linux adoption. At SteelEye we delight in giving our LifeKeeper customers the best choice in open platforms,” said John Banfield, Director Sales, EMEA of SteelEye Technology. “We expect Linux on POWER deployments to be primarily within enterprise data centers running mission critical applications where data protection and high availability are paramount. LifeKeeper is here and now ready to support deployments on OpenPower and just as successfully as we have shown on IBM’s xSeries platform.”
