Arbor Networks Launches New Network Security and Management Platform for Service Providers

LEXINGTON, Mass. — MAY 2, 2005 — Arbor Networks, a leader in network security, today introduced the new flagship Peakflow® SP, extending the industry’s top security platform for service providers.

The new Peakflow SP integrates network-wide traffic and routing analysis with the award-winning Peakflow DoS, distributed denial of service (DDoS) and worm prevention technology – all in a single device. Peakflow SP is now designed to work for both security operations and network operations, as organizations work more closely together to fight today’s much larger and more sophisticated cyber attacks.

“We are pleased to bring the new Peakflow SP to market,” said Tom Schuster, president of Arbor Networks. “Peakflow SP is a direct result of working with our customers to determine what they need to effectively address their growing network security and operational challenges. Our customers told us they are looking for a streamlined solution that combines both security and network operations, and management, as cooperation and joint efforts between these teams continue to grow. This is the first product built to meet these needs.”

“With the increasing number and complexity of denial of service attacks and their impact on performance and availability, it’s becoming more and more important for security and network teams to be able to work together with a unified set of tools,” said Paul Froutan, vice president of product development, Rackspace Managed Hosting. “The new Peakflow SP product allows us to combine the capabilities of the security, monitoring and reporting specific for each of our data centers. We anticipate that this will enable a more rapid response and resolution to these attacks and even better quality of service for our customers.”

The platform, which is used by service providers, MSOs, ISPs, educational institutions and large enterprises, helps by:

” Reducing costly threats by providing network situational awareness via network-wide traffic and routing reports for in-depth forensics
” Streamlining security and network operations by augmenting DDoS detection, traceback and resolution with extensive traffic visualization and forensic analysis in a single device

In the past two years, network threats have increased in frequency, impact, and intensity. Attacks have become so prevalent and costly that several major service providers have launched security services based on Peakflow to combat these incidents.

While attacks formerly were isolated to one network, today they are more likely to become worldwide infrastructure attacks that cross network and country boundaries. As a result, the diagnostic tools used by network operators must provide both network-wide and Internet-wide analysis.

Additional new features in the Peakflow SP platform include:

” Worm Tab – Peakflow SP users can now quickly drill down in the management console to see which hosts are infected with worms, while also providing comprehensive graphs that help visualize how the worms affect the network
” External Route Views – By working with partners in the attack Fingerprint Sharing Alliance, Peakflow now offers a way for providers to see their routes outside of their own network domains, helping companies with forensic investigations, for example, when a hacker hijacks routes to use for spam or illegal businesses
” Top Talkers – By providing an easy-to-use GUI interface, network administrators can easily locate the top talkers inside the network, as well as what Web sites or areas they are accessing outside of the network. For instance, if a person is accessing a File Sharing site and violating acceptable use policies, the network administrator will be able to easily see that breach of policy.

ABOUT PEAKFLOW SP
Deployed in over 90 major service provider and MSO networks across the globe, Peakflow SP streamlines infrastructure security and network operations, while improving operational efficiencies, reducing costs and offering new revenue streams for service providers.

Using Peakflow’s unique anomaly detection engine, Peakflow SP proactively detects and traces network-wide anomalies, including distributed DDoS attacks and worms (e.g. Slammer, Blaster). These attacks are often aimed at the network infrastructure, an area of network security that firewalls and IDSs cannot address. Using Peakflow SP network operators can quickly resolve these threats before their network is affected, service suffers, or customers complain.

Peakflow SP transforms business planning and operations through its complete view of network-wide traffic and routing data. Network operators can detect, analyze, and mitigate network outages and inefficiencies, whether they stem from an attack, misconfiguration, misuse, or the longer-term impact of changes in network utilization.
