Critical Path Releases Powerful Upgrade to Memova Anti-Abuse Appliance

SAN FRANCISCO August 30, 2005 – Critical Path, Inc. (Nasdaq:CPTH), a leading provider of messaging software and services, today announced the release of Memovaâ„? Anti-Abuse Appliance Version 2.0. The latest version of the Memovaâ„? Anti-Abuse Appliance provides greater and more efficient anti-abuse protection with the addition of SPF (Sender Policy Framework) authentication, new tarpitting capabilities and a range of new administrative controls.

Widely deployed by leading ISPs and telcos, the Memova Anti-Abuse Appliance is a plug-and-play solution designed specifically for service providers. The appliance sits at the network gateway and stops spam, viruses and malicious attacks, such as denial-of-service, directory harvest and phishing, before they can enter or exit the service provider’s messaging system.

With version 2.0, the Memova Anti-Abuse Appliance now enables service providers to check the validity of email sender addresses using SPF (Sender Policy Framework) Classic – a standard currently under review by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) that is expected to become the industry-wide standard for email authentication. In addition, version 2.0 of Memova Anti-Abuse provides new tarpitting capabilities that slow the processing of messages from potential spam sources, preventing spammers from quickly delivering high volumes of spam. The new SPF and tarpitting capabilities augment the existing traffic management and message content analysis capabilities provided by the Memova Anti-Abuse Appliance, which have consistently blocked viruses and more than 95% of spam for service providers using the solution.

The Memova Anti-Abuse Appliance continues to provide a highly cost-effective solution. By utilizing traffic management, tarpitting and SPF to reduce the number of email messages requiring costly content analysis, the appliance significantly reduces the cost of anti-abuse, allowing service providers to supply a better level of anti-spam and anti-virus protection for all subscribers. Additionally, the enhanced administrative controls in version 2.0 empower service providers to easily customize anti-spam and anti-virus services at the domain, class-of-service and subscriber levels. This way, service providers can offer premium levels of service for subscribers who want extra anti-abuse protection, increasing ARPU (average revenue per user).

“This upgrade is designed to increase the scalability and overall impact of Memova Anti-Abuse and will better support our broad range of messaging solutions,” said Mike Serbinis, CTO, Critical Path. “By providing more functionality that prevents suspect emails from entering a service provider’s messaging system, we can further reduce the total cost of ownership, while improving the end user’s messaging experience.”
