Microsoft warns of imminent end of support for all but the latest Internet Explorer versions

Windows users who still prefer Internet Explorer to all other browsers have been urged by Microsoft to update to the latest (and last) version of the browser (v11), as the company plans to end support for all previous versions in January.

“After January 12, 2016, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for older versions of Internet Explorer,” the company stated. “End of support means there will be no more security updates, non-security updates, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates.”

“We understand many customers have web apps and services designed specifically for older versions of Internet Explorer, so we’re continuing to improve our set of Enterprise Mode tools to help you run those applications in Internet Explorer 11. Upgrading to Internet Explorer 11 can ease the upgrade to Windows 10, too, since Internet Explorer 11 is supported on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10,” Jatinder Mann, Senior Program Manager Lead, and Fred Pullen, Product Marketing Director of the Microsoft Edge & Internet Explorer team, explained in November.

While Microsoft can’t drop support for IE 11 right away, it’s obvious (and natural) that the company is slowly pushing users towards its new browser, Microsoft Egde, and towards Windows 10 in general.

Edge is included in Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, Windows 10 Mobile and Xbox One.
